Angling Trust London Winter League (final round)
Grand Union Canal, Woolstone (60 pegs)
Whoever penned the phrase ‘lightning never strikes twice in the same place’ must have been an angler as this final round saw winner Tommy Boyce fish from the same peg as the previous week’s winner using the same tactics - breadpunch over punch crumb - to take a hard-won 7-0-0 of roach and small skimmers worth £140 in pools. Even more coincidentally, the top four weights all came from the same section and pegs and would you believe, match organiser Gary Eales took exactly the same weight of 5-1-8 as he had last week from the peg next to where he fished and not to be outdone Maver Image cleared the board and took the League’s top honours.

Angling Trust Upper Thames Winter League (final round)
Bristol Avon, Chippenham & Melksham (70 pegs)
Top weight in this final round was Richard Chave of Garbolino Blackmore Vale MG with a chub weight of 34-7-0. Rich was drawn on the noted cattle drink peg at Beanacre on Melksham’s water and got off to an unfortunate start by losing two chub in succession on a light pinkie pole rig. A change to a heavier set-up saw a string of good fish taken, the best going nearly 4lb, pole at 14m with double and triple maggot or bits of worm fished across the river to a far bank bush doing the job. Second place went to Ian Shepherd, Daiwa Gordon League who took a nice bag of roach and hybrids for 16-14-0 from the Park section in Melksham, catching on bread at 13m. On the team front, Garbolino Blackmore Vale sealed their pick of the unknown semi-final venues with a third place on the day and this still saw them win the league with a two point advantage from Daiwa Gordon League.
Result: 1 R Chave, Garbolino Blackmore Vale MG, 34-7-0; 2 I Shepherd, Daiwa Gordon League, 16-14-0; 3 A Jones, Daiwa Gordon League, 8-14-0; 4 A Brown, Colmic Talisman, 8-11-0; 5 K Rowles, Devizes MG, 7-8-0; 6 S Dabbs, Browning Andover MG, 7-5-8.

Swallow Lake (11 pegs)
With the water clearing and its temperature dropping to little over 4 degrees this was always going to be a hard match for most with the carp shoaling up tightly. Oakfield Fishery (Sat)
Swallow & Brook Lakes (20 pegs)
A full moon, the coldest night of the year and crystal clear water did not bode well but the fishing was surprisingly good. With the water clearing the carp shoaled heavily in their normal winter haunts and it was no surprise that the Brook Lake produced its first winning weight for a couple of months at peg 1. Richard Ives fished the long pole all day using worm, meat and maggot to tempt carp to 7lb from the peninsula and the island.
Result: 1 R Ives, Ernest Turner, 57-10-0; 2 S Carr, GOT Baits Oakfield, 54-0-0; 3 J Brewster, GOT Baits Oakfield, 50-6-0; 4 M Page, GOT Baits Oakfield, 47-14-0; 5 P McLoughlin, GOT Baits Oakfield, 35-1-0; 6 B Walker, GOT Baits Oakfield, 32-13-0.

Daisy Lake (16 pegs)
After the poor results of the match the previous day, all that was expected was the odd bite but not to be beaten, Steve Crawley managed to put together a string of small skimmers on squatt and pinkie to win the match with 6-13-0 while the rest of the field found tiny roach and perch to keep them busy.
Result: 1 S Crawley, Redbridge, 6-13-0; 2 A Griffiths, Team Raiders, 4-11-0; 3 L Linford, Redbridge, 3-11-0; 4 G Bullock, Redbridge, 2-13-0; 5 M Linford, Redbridge, 2-8-0; 6 B Everett, Redbridge, 2-5-0.

The ice breakers were out for the first time this year and the wind made it a grim day in the cold but Steve James wasn’t moaning as he won with plenty to spare, weighing in 73-6-0 from peg 32 where he swapped between long pole and waggler with maggot to land carp to 5lb.
