Venue information

This wide and slow-moving stretch of the River Nene is reknown for its roach and chub stocks. Access is very good here, with free parking located off Peterorough's Oundle Road. A walk to the closest peg is around 400 yards, and the track alongside the river makes pulling a trolley easy going. By far the best tactics here are either a pole or feeder. Fish the pole in the main flow, presenting either hemp or fluoro pinkie over loosefed hemp and a dark, hemp-based groundbait. For the chub try a maggot feeder cast towards the many boats moored on the far bank. You will find that depths vary between 10 and 14ft throughout this very popular stretch, so a bulk pole rig works best here to push the bait through the thousands of bleak, then present the bait in the final 3ft of water using a string of dropper shot. There are bream catches along Orton Upstream stretch, but locating them can be patchy. Pike sport can be frantic along this stretch, and by far the best times to locate and catch pike are immediately after matches, when anglers can inform you of where they have received hits from these predators. Day tickets are available on the bank.

Bring a spinning rod!

If you get your tactics right here, when polefishing for the hordes of roach, and you're lucky (or good enough) to get the silvers coming you will get plenty of pike action from jacks to about 8lb. So, take a handful of mini jerkbaits or diving plugs and you'll be able to catch a few toothy critters too!
