Venue information

IZAAK WALTON’S old stomping ground, the River Lea offers some varied sport from a range of river species. And here at Dobbs Weir there’s some fascinating summer specimen sport on offer.

Averaging just four feet deep, this is where the former 8Ib 13oz record chub was landed, but chub are not the only species. The venue also throws up occasional carp, good pike, the odd barbel, some tench to just over 6Ib plus roach and perch to 1Ib 8oz.

Due to the crayfish pests, it’s wise to avoid using anything with rubber in your terminal tackle, or the pesky varmints will demolish your rigs. Large halibut pellets are the best baits to avoid them, presented over smaller 3mm pellets for the carp, chub and tench.

Pike fall to legered sea deadbaits, while bronze bream are caught on small feeders with worms tipped with a maggot or caster.

Traditional pole, stick or waggler tactics all work for those mixed catches with caster or maggot presented off the bottom, over regularly introduced loosefeed.

Hotspots are the Essex Road swims on the weirpool and far bank of Navigation above Fish ‘n’ Eels Public House.

Getting there

From Hoddesdon (A10), head for Naseing and you pick up Essex Road. Follow this road through and you can park on the right just past Charltons Mead industrial estate or continue on across the weir and backwater and park on the right in Avenue Road.

Fished Dobbs twice this year. First visit was a hot day in the summer. There were 3 of us there and it was the first time we had fished it. we were after the roach and chub on the float and i was also after barbel. all we had the whole day was a tiny roach and a tiny dace each, and one crayfish. dobbs wier looks very nice but there is alot of crap under the water. its full of old beams, poles and bricks. The second time was in early october. got snagged up again on the barbel rod with no bites at all but did catch 3 pike of 4-6lb with ease early in the morning, only had 3 dead roach with me which all got taken within 2 minuits after casting. This seems to me to be a frustrating water that you need to fish regulary to know where to cast to avoid problems. Like alot of the Lea its a venue thats seen better days.
