Venue information
IZAAK WALTON’S old stomping ground, the River Lea offers some varied sport from a range of river species. And here at Dobbs Weir there’s some fascinating summer specimen sport on offer.
Averaging just four feet deep, this is where the former 8Ib 13oz record chub was landed, but chub are not the only species. The venue also throws up occasional carp, good pike, the odd barbel, some tench to just over 6Ib plus roach and perch to 1Ib 8oz.
Due to the crayfish pests, it’s wise to avoid using anything with rubber in your terminal tackle, or the pesky varmints will demolish your rigs. Large halibut pellets are the best baits to avoid them, presented over smaller 3mm pellets for the carp, chub and tench.
Pike fall to legered sea deadbaits, while bronze bream are caught on small feeders with worms tipped with a maggot or caster.
Traditional pole, stick or waggler tactics all work for those mixed catches with caster or maggot presented off the bottom, over regularly introduced loosefeed.
Hotspots are the Essex Road swims on the weirpool and far bank of Navigation above Fish ‘n’ Eels Public House.
