Only got into carp fishing this year/season (2013/14)and a friend recommended Stanborough as a good place to start. I'm not disappointed. It's not an easy place to catch (I've heard some some real horror stories about the easy commercials!!) and I've learnt a lot about Carp fishing in the short time I've had whilst fishing at Stanborough. The baliffs are very friendly and happily give tips on swims, feed, etc. I have landed some very nice commons from 8lb to mid doubles and caught a lovely 23lb common on Monday 2nd December. To date I've only had one mirror from the lake, but have heard there are some good ones in there. I haven't fished the river, but have heard some good things about the Barbel and Chub (may try it over the winter). I avoid going there on Thursdays and Sundays as they have matches on. That said, there are still plenty of pegs to fish from. Reading some reviews you may get a bad view of Stanborough, but I've never had a problem and I've fished there once a week since June this year. I've had a few blanks and speaking with other anglers it hasn't been uncommon this season, but to be fair I'm not expecting the fish to jump in the net for me! Apart from the carp, there are plenty of bream and small roach. There are ticket machines for your day ticket, but I normally pay the baliff when he walks round. The car park machines are currently working so if you arrive before 9am you have to go to the boating office pay for a ticket!! A bit of nuisance, but not the end of the world. Overall I would totally recommend Stanborough as a good venue to visit.
