Venue information
A LEGEND in carp-fishery circles, Cuttle Mill is a five-star carp fishery that attracts visiting anglers from all over the country, to sample specimen carp angling at its very best.
This scenic carp pool, beautifully surrounded by trees, can only be described as idyllic. It’s certainly one of those waters that lends itself to a little dreaming and with carp to 40lb 2oz and a 39lb 12oz fish out recently, and an average of 20lb in 2004, those dreams can certainly be fulfilled at Cuttle Mill.
The regular 7.45am draw for pegs on the carp pool is always an exciting way to begin the day, as the draw ensures a very even rotation of anglers and pitches. Booking in for your place in the draw usually means a few weeks on the waiting list, such is the popularity of the pool, but it’s well worth having a little patience because of the quality of the carp here.
Last summer tiger nut boilies and onsite ‘bait guru’ Kev’s homemade pop-ups took quality fish each week, fished among light amounts of loose offerings. Thirteen 30lb ‘monsters’ fell to these combinations in just one week in 2004!
Upon the arrival of the colder months, Frank Warwick 8mm Fluoro pop-ups score highly, fished with PVA strings of bait or singly.
Early mornings and dusk are better-than-average carp feeding times here and margin baits take some heavyweight fish into the evenings.
Not content with having this superb facility on site, located next to the carp pool is an exceptionally popular coarse pool, with roach to 2lb (30lb of roach on casters or maggots is possible) bream to 6lb, tench to 7lb, perch to 4lb and unusually large dace to 10oz.
Baits of white and red maggots, corn, meat, and casters take some very large mixed catches from this pool. All that’s needed are standard pole and waggler tactics. If you are loosefeeding squats or pinkies close in you can get the smaller ‘bits’ fish feeding, which, in turn, brings those big perch close in. Try half a lobworm on a size 14 to then pick out a big perch, as a bait of this size will almost certainly avoid the silver fish.
