Venue information
PIKE have always been prime targets for anglers throughout the whole of Ireland, providing alternative action during the spring festivals and fun when sport from the traditional Irish species of bream has died away in the depths of winter.
The River Shannon at Portumna in County Galway has to be one of the first waters to look into for consistent predator action.
The more popular match stretches of the river here will always provide good pike sport simply because of the numbers of silver fish crammed together. Even when the river is busy with festivals, in April and October, there is always plenty of room for pike fishing too.
For regular action try the river at Roger’s Island and Fairyhill, which are closest to Portumna. Short walks seem to be the order of the day – I suppose it’s all of the gear and feed we carry – and when the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board created a mile-long fishing road a couple of years ago they also turned the Old Sheebeen and Salmon Run into popular venues.
There are about 50 swims on the Salmon Run, there is an added advantage on the 25 pegs at Sheebeen of the area being a sheltered backwater that escapes the worst of any high water levels and some anglers will find wind shelter in the waterside wood.
