shimano, okuma, shakespeare & diawa all make excellent reels ranging in price from about £15 to several hundred.for general float fishing applications i personally use shakespeare, thats because i'm sponsored by them, but any of the aforementioned will do. Expect to pay around £30-40 for a reasonable reel. Look for a shallow spool for float fishing and a deeper spool for ledger fishing. The most important bits are line lay and how well the drag works, a smooth, efficient drag is very important as it's this that will be the deciding factor when playing a large fish. A drag that doesn't work properly will jerk and cause the line to break or the hook to pull out where a smooth drag allows line to pull off the spool smoothly allowing pressure to be applied during a fight with little risk of breakage. Make sure you fill the spool right to the edge but do not over fill as the line will pour off when you are casting causing tangles, if the spool is under filled then it can badly affect casting ability.
