Any tips on choosing a swim as lakes are so featureless and uninviting at this time of year. I fish for roach, carp and tench etc.

Plumbing the depth is important when fishing at any time of the year, but in winter it is vital that you use your plummet not only to find the depth, but to locate the slightest depression in the lake bed or any indications of a ledge as it is here that you will locate fish. Ledges and undulations are primary areas that collect foodstuff that drift around in the undertow, therefore the fish won’t be too far away. If there is an island within casting distance, choose a swim where you can reach it. Here a feeder cast to a sheltered area of water close to the island will bring rewards, particularly with carp because they regularly patrol around islands. You should be able to locate roach in deep, open water, but don’t always expect that the roach will be on the bottom – they may all be in mid-water, where it is warmest. For this reason, use a waggler rig, set it at the full depth but shot it with a strung-out pattern using No8 shot. This will provide a very slow drop of your hookbait therefore you may get bites at any depth as the bait falls.
