Just before our matches start I often see fish topping. Once the whistle blows the fish vanish. Should I still try to catch them or fish the margins?

I would most definitely target the area where you saw the activity, but I wouldn’t neglect the margins either because this is where you will be able to catch big carp in the latter stages of the match. Although the fish have stopped pimpling the surface, they should still be in that vicinity, so loosefeed the area little and often, and fish a waggler over the top. Start by fishing at full depth with a series of dropper shot, and expect to shallow the rig to catch fish well off the bottom as the session progresses. Feed the margin swim throughout the match with pellets and sweetcorn, or chunks of meat. A good handful every 20 minutes should keep the carp coming back for more throughout the day, then consider dropping a baited rig over the top about three hours into the match. Expect some arm-wrenching action almost straight away!
