It may not be right to fish with livebait, but we have a right to

It’s not much of a secret that I don’t really like pike. Nothing personal, it’s just that I find the whole process of trying to catch something with more teeth than brain cells all a bit clumsy, crude and, more often than not, painful. There’s too much metal and blood for my liking. Then, of course, there are the anglers ...

37lb carp taken on a livebait

It isn’t just traditional predatory species that will eat a livebait, as Mark Barratt found last week when he landed this huge 37lb 15oz carp on a small rudd offering intended for catfish. The 36-year-old, from Wilburton in Cambs, was filming a new series of the satellite TV series Predators when his bite alarm signalled a vicious take. Mark initially ...

Keith Arthur - BAA livebait ban is the thin end of the wedge

The decision made by the committee of the BAA to ban livebaiting is one of the most serious matters to arise in angling politics in the last decade, in my opinion. There is no more natural means of catching fish than by using livebaits. Our very sport, coarse fishing, bears its name under the meaning of coarse beingnatural: we fish ...

The zip down plastic cover keeps spillage to a minimum and an inner mesh cover prevents the bait from jumping out when the outer lid is open. Battery powered pump included. (Batteries not ...

to livebait... or not?

So tomorrow... I'm faced with a quandary. I'm going pike fishing with a mate to a very good water - my mate's last three fish have been over 20lb. He catches them on livebaits and struggles on deads but I don't really fancy sticking my trebles in the back of an 10oz roach. Something feels odd about it. However, my buddy reckons it's lousy on deads. Do I go and risk a blank by fishing herring and smelt, or throw my cap in the ring and stick on a big 'wriggler' even though it ...

Potential IGFA record catfish caught from River Po in Italy

This potential new IGFA world record Wels catfish weighing 250lb 5oz was caught from the River Po in Italy. Italian angler Roberto Godi tempted the colossal 8ft 2ins long specimen on a bream livebait and finally brought it to the net after a titanic 45-minute battle on the banks of the river, which runs through the north Italian city of ...

Des Taylor's pike fly fishing comments

Reading this weeks article regarding fly fishing for Pike, I felt my blood boil. Mr. taylor is just  talking the same rubbish spouted by so called proper Pike Fishermen, who A - don't  fly fish and  B - live in the dark ages. Let me point out a few issues here. Firstly, He clearly has a problem with the method for Pike fullstop. May he say why? A fly rod is deemed acceptable to to tame a hard fighting fresh run Salmon which could be caught and released but a pike? No, it seems. You will hear the usually arguement that due to ...
