to livebait... or not?

So tomorrow... I'm faced with a quandary. I'm going pike fishing with a mate to a very good water - my mate's last three fish have been over 20lb. He catches them on livebaits and struggles on deads but I don't really fancy sticking my trebles in the back of an 10oz roach. Something feels odd about it. However, my buddy reckons it's lousy on deads. Do I go and risk a blank by fishing herring and smelt, or throw my cap in the ring and stick on a big 'wriggler' even though it ...

Des Taylor's pike fly fishing comments

Reading this weeks article regarding fly fishing for Pike, I felt my blood boil. Mr. taylor is just  talking the same rubbish spouted by so called proper Pike Fishermen, who A - don't  fly fish and  B - live in the dark ages.

Let me point out a few issues here. Firstly, He clearly has a problem with the method for Pike fullstop. May he say why? A fly rod is deemed acceptable to to tame a hard fighting fresh run Salmon which could be caught and released but a pike? No, it seems.

You will hear the usually arguement that due to ...

I'm sorry...K.A again

"There is no more natural means of catching fish than by using livebaits."

This is again an extract taken from his article about the B.A.A banning the use of livebait.

Should that not read..There is no more natural means of catching predatory fish than by using livebaits ?

Not all fish can be caught on livebaits, what's more natural than catching fish on things they feed on like worms, slugs, shrimps, mussels or berries.

Is it me ? am I ready his comments completely wrong ?

advice on what to get a very keen 8yr old please?

Hello all,

as a complete non fisher (for the moment!) I hope you don't mind me posting here.

I have an 8yr old Godson who is very keen on fishing.  Although he's only little he is very serious about it, takes his toy rod and some livebait down to the local river as often as he can, and reads all the fishing books in the library.  His parents are too busy to take him fishing so I thought I might take him and get a new hobby for myself at the same time.

Unfortunately I am a complete novice - ...

Angling Trust

Have you read Keith Arthur's column (page 8) in this weeks AT ?

Well I never thought that I would ever admit this on the forum, but, I AGREE with him over the livebait issue.

Also I have decided to do my bit for the Angling Trust, I have only 3 weeks left before I go to New Zealand, but , I have offered to work for the Angling Trust for those 3 weeks if they want me.

Can you help ?

Hastings Old Town and Worthing Pier report

From Angling Times...

Hastings benefits from acres of beach space stretching from the Old Town in the east to the far western promenade at Bulverhythe. This is a deepish shingle beach, so no need to cast too far. Soles and bass are available, and should the conditions settle the mackerel should come back in. Use lugworm on a clipped-down pulley. Low water on flood should give you the best chances. The best stretch is behind the Angling Club. From the A21, signposted for Hastings, exit on to A2101 St Helen¹s Rd heading to Hastings, then take the A2101 Albert Road ...

20lb Pike on coaching session

Well we had a very profitable morning today CrocHunter. We missed the rush and Barry Fuller my pupil turned up at 8.30 by which time the pike circus was already gathered in the deep water early pegs. After a bit of a chat we took a short stroll to the boards in front of the cafe to set up. I have caught a lot of jacks off there before but nothing of any great size. To be honest neither of the rods Barry had with him were really suitable. One was an out and out waggler rod but the other ...
