Re: Paste pole rigs

What you need mate is a float with a long sight tip, I use 6lb line for paste fishing straight through to a size 12 hook.  As far as shotting goes I prefer not to use any when paste fishing, just line, float and hook, the paste will be heavy enough to shot your float.  Set your depth so that just the top half inch of your float is showing and strike when it either goes under or shoots up out of the water.

With this set up you will know if the paste has gone from the hook so you wont waste any time trying to catch fish on a bare hook!

Re: Paste pole rigs

paste fishing is my favourate pole method,i use a mail line either shimano silk shock or maver genisis i use at least 0.16 line usually straight through but do use rigs in 0.18 and even 0.20 but this depends all on the pole of course,i use a margin pole mainly when bagging big fish but my map adrenalin copes with 0.16 rigs with preston hollow core elastic.hok wise ive han no problems with preston pr 27's ive tried several patterns but these have never let me down highly recommend them

float wise i always use the mave paste floats, they are quite durable but one tip is slide a piece of silicon over the bristle to prevent the side eye pulling when bagging.

also heres a shortcut that rose and toombsy done to explain better than me how to set up using these floats,i find this the only way to fish paste as you know when its broken down and off the hook so you can sit and wait for a bite knowing your baits on ,especially as you get knocks of silvers too when fishing paste,so you can read the bite properly

Re: Paste pole rigs

Any good pole rig line will do just match it to the size of fish you will catch on the day. Hooks I use either B911 eyed or animal if the fish are big, again use a size to suit the size of fish as the hook is buried in the paste and can not be seen you can use larger hooks than normal. The most important part of the rig is the float and the floats that I have found to be best for the job are the Middy in line grey coloured paste floats in 4x10 size. These floats are extremly strong and will not let you down. I dont use shot on my paste rigs so I can tell when the paste comes off and if you place a piece of silcone rubber on the tip of the bristle and the very bottom of the stem you wont get any tangles when shipping out. Your paste needs to be very soft and the only way to get it out is to put it in a cad pot when shipping out.

Re: Paste pole rigs

Hi mate to add too the good advice thats been given so far. When you plum your  depth and you find a good flat spot and have set your depth right try and find the same depth in anther part of your peg, you will give yourself another line to try an be able to rest the swim if it starts to die on you. I think If1sky is spot on with needing a cad pot I make my paste so soft it would be impossible to ship out without one .

One thing I will say is when putting the paste on the hook roll a small ball then use your line like cheese wire to cut through the ball then gently pull the line till the hook rests at the bottom of the paste that way your bait will be in the same place every and your float will be set as you originaly set it. Practice with this method is all it takes watch out for liners and wait till the float shoots under as its very easy to tell the difference between proper bites and liners. Fowl hooking can be common with this method simply because of the soft paste and large hooks employed.

With feeding I put 4-5 pellets with the paste in the pot when shiping out. I like to use my favourte green swim stim as the paste. When I get to my peg my first job is to mix the paste up with lake water added to the groundbait till a wet mix is obtained then leave it while you set up by then it will have absorbed the water and will be ready, I will often put crushed hemp in the paste as well , for me and the venue I fish it makes a BIG difference.

Goodluck with practicing this method mate its great when you suss it out ..............................

We may forget the fish we catch but never where we caught them.
