Split Shot

I know their are rules on lead split shot and weights but can you help me out.

Which lead shot and weights are legal and which are not and why dont they make it all from non toxic alloys so there is no confusion ?

Re: Split Shot

Hello Penguin you can only use lead shot from size no.14 to no.8 and lead weights of 1ounce .Anything below 1ounce non lead and anything bigger than a size 8 must be non lead. The reason we use lead is because the density is much higher for its volume I hope this is of help to you.

You only really need to worry abou this problem if you've bought some split shot from abroad - either while on holiday or via the net, as that stuff might contain illegal lead shot

re; split shot

the trouble with alloys, is the hardness, some brands are much to hard to open a bit ,to allow you to slide them up or  down the line, all lead was uniform, alloys are not. i am still undecided, after years,on which is the softest, even different tubs of the same brand dont seem to be the same.

Re: Split Shot

I use to use dinsmores shot but bought a couple of small tubs of shot to top my dispenser up. I find that I lose shot. I am using about 5lb breaking strain main line with 3 lb hook-length, not sure of what the diameters would be.

Does anyone else suffer this problem? Can I do anything to make the shot stay on without crimping the line too much? is there a better split shot I could use?

Re: Split Shot

I use Anchor Rugby shot and find it opens very easily as it is double cut, it has a very good aerodynamic shape and stays on the line even on the heaviest of casts.
