I don't know if this has been asked before, But what is your biggest fiah that you have caught on the Pole, and how long did it take you to land it???

Re: Whats your biggest fish caught on the Pole

My long standing personal best on the pole was a lovely looking mirror of 11lb 6 out of a local water. It dragged my 12 elastic all over the place even distubing fella opposite me as it steamed through his swim, he wasnt impressed but never mind. Took me around 10 minutes to have him on my lap.

However that fish will be quite some way below many others I'd have thought and is nothing in comparison to mastafisha who recently had a massive 35lb 4oz carp on the pole. Look up 'another new PB on the pole' and you can see his thread on here.

I think that fishing for carp over a few pound with a pole is not the best way to do things. I have seen more fish lost and poles broken than enough use the right tool for the job you are doing the fish no favours by using a pole to catch fish they were not designed for.

Sorry Greg but i have to disagree with you on this point,Poles are made for Carp fishing now and have been for a long time,i have landed one of over 20lb on my pole so i know they can handle big weights far better than some might think.

I use a Leeda Assassin margin pole that is 18 rated,it is strong and will land much bigger carp if needed although i don't always target carp.

If you use the right elastic in the right Pole then you can feel very safe of landing big carp of over 20/30lbs but like i say it has to be right,i have seen some have there rods snapped by carp simply because they did not expect to catch one so not all rods can handle carp the same with poles but if you use a margin pole they are made for just that reason, strong and heavy, not everyones cup of tea but thats the choice to make,i would not target big carp on a match pole of 16mt but a margin pole of 11mt i would feel safe, just my opinions

I make mistakes i am only human well half the time.

Hello Mrwell I am aware of these poles and I have aTRAMBUCCO LUCEFER and a SHIMANO BEASTMASTER  and have fished with them but I  still say they are not the ideal tool for playing and landing big fish I have had these poles for some years and mostly I use them for the placing of baits with a cupping kit for which they are ideal.

10lb carp it took the best part of an hour, needless to say I wasn't intending to catch a carp and no 8 elastic in 8ft of water with a carp on the end isn't the best combination.

I hope i didn't start a war here, All these Match Anglers seem to manage with Carp ok, But my question was Biggest Fish not specifically Carp

Well mine is that 10lb carp I mentioned, and while I would have been happy to catch it on stronger elastic as I would have been able to have more control. Going under gunned was a bit of a problem, (you know the sort of problem when you wish the thing would come off). The thing with catching big fish on rod and line is that you have far more control, whereas catching them on a pole you have to really bully them in. I did see an article in the Angling Times some time ago where a chap caught some really big carp on light pole gear, but the way he did it was to get the net under them more or less before they knew that they had been hooked, it worked for him every time.

your right there Gudgeon big trout are like that if you can get them to the net quick but if they get their second wind they run you ragged. I think that was the reasoning behind scoop nets that came out a few years ago.

Hi Alan.....no war at all, just opinions like it should be, i think it is safe to say it is better to target big fish on Rod and line rather than Pole but when i say big fish i mean Carp not Tench,Bream and so on because these run to no more than touching double on many waters and if you struggle to land fish of that weight on a pole then something is wrong.

This is the age old argument (opinions) that rods have better control over the fish but Poles have better presentation so you will always have some element of doubt in your chosen method ,keeping to the topic,my personal best is the carp i mentioned of just over 20lb on the pole with a size 16 hook on luncheon meat, size 18 elastic and 6lb line was used and it took me about 15 minutes to land putting little preasure on it,in open water you don't need to bully them in,just play them out.

So long as your sensible and recognise the signs in your swim when it suddenly goes quiet i normally change to heavier rig for 20 mins or so, It saves getting cracked off don't you think.
