My last day on the river part 1

Here goes for my last time out.

Tuesday 13th March, In the car Foo fighters playing and looking forward to my last day of the season on the river.  Arrived at my planned spot and was relieved to see that no one was in the swim I wanted, although I wasn’t expecting anyone to be there.

Started by throwing a few pieces of bread into the stream and watched it go downstream to see if there were any takers from the surface as it passed under the overhanging trees.  Nothing but it looked a good spot so thought I would still give it a go as there was a deeper pool on the nearside just downstream where I thought I might get something trotting a float through it.

Set up my float rod rigged up for trotting a stick float and threw handfuls of breadcrumb slightly upstream to give it time to sink by the time it reached the deeper pool.  Stick float rigged up straight through to a size 12 hook with a piece of bread on the hook.  After several runs, nothing, so swapped to cheese on the hook.  Several more runs and still nothing.  Decided to rig up a feeder rod and have a go at a likely looking spot on the far bank with cheese bait.  A few casts and an hour gone by still nothing so gave the maggots a go.  Still nothing and have now been sitting there for just over two hours, time to pack up and move.

Loaded my gear back into the car and set off for a different spot on a different river about half hour away.

Re: My last day on the river part 2

Arrived to find I had hit slack water with virtually no movement in the river. Set up my feeder rod.  Loaded the small feeder with a 50/50 mix of brown crumb and shop bought ground bait.  Attached hook with size 10 hook and hair rigged double pellet and cast to mid river in search of the bream that often reside there.  5 minutes later the bailiff turned up on his litter picking round.  The bailiff is the chairman of one of the local clubs, that I might join after talking to him.  This is not a club controlled stretch but the landowner who has always let people fish there did stop people a couple of years ago, one of the reasons being litter.  I must say at this point that the litter on the whole was left by people staying overnight and looking at it would lead you to assume it was EE’s but they have never been caught so can’t substantiate this.  Anyway back to the bailiff, his club does sometimes venture onto this stretch so he talked to the landowners and offered the services of his club to bailiff it and collect litter if they would leave it open.   After a few minutes chatting he carried on his way and a couple of taps on my tip followed by it wrenching round in typical bream fashion and I was into my first fish.  A bream of around 4lb was soon on the bank.  Rebaited and cast again as the bailiff (top bloke by the way) came back again with a carrier bag full of rubbish from what he said looked like EE’s being there at night.  Following recent threads I thought I would have a go fishing with a waggler float as the river was almost stationary and I had never fished a waggler on the river before.  Rigged up the float rod, plumbed up and cast a size 16 hook with double maggot.  Within a couple of minutes the tip on my feeder rod was away again and another bream of around the same size was soon on the bank.  Rebaited and recast then turned my attention to getting the waggler rig back in the water.  By this time the tide was beginning to run in and no more fish came my way.  Normal for me when the tide is coming up I always struggle to catch.  5pm, back in the car and on my way home.

It is going to be a few weeks before I can go again as really busy with work but I might head for a local commercial and see if I can catch a load of small to medium carp for a change.

Just read this Andy  My old man swore by cheese for chub , I might give it a go next time I fish ( on a commercial ) Why do you prefer rivers to commercials when the catch rate is so different ?

Of course the conclusion is that if there is no God head , no guiding hand , no mystical force , then we are all automata clinging to a rock , whizzing through space ,hurtling and clinging on to some God forsaken ride, chemical accidents , accidentally chemically aware , peeking at conciousness , trapped like rats in a rat trap.

Benny, don't get me wrong I do enjoy a day on commercials but my preference is for the river.  There is maybe a few reasons, it is, I will say a different challenge, as I have been to commercials that I found hard going, they are not all "easy".  I am no great angler though.  Strangely I find the river more relaxing, not sure why maybe because it just seems, or is more natural.  I do sometimes target particular species but I also often use a catch all bait and see what comes up, you never know, and I like that.

I have been to one or two commercials that are "easy" and sat there catching carp after carp and to be honest I have got fed up with it and put my rod down and put the kettle on for a cuppa and a break, that's why i couldn't get into match fishing it's purely pleasure for me.

My first experiences of fishing and catching fish were on the river as that was where everyone went in those days and maybe those first experiences that got me interested have never left me.

Like you say the catch rate is very different and this seems to have been a tough year this last season but at the end of the day catching fish in a river is not always difficult, finding them is the difficult bit.

As for the chub, yes cheese is generally pretty good as is bread and also worms.  Cheers

andyc40.

Nice write up andy. I enjoyed reading that. I will fish anywhere but my first love is river fishing, it's where I learnt to fish. There is a fascination about moving water that is hard to describe. So which river was it you were fishing?. Pete.
