RIP OFF at DUNWICH Suffolk

I have just go back from a days fishing on the Thames and Sue said lets have fish and chips for tea so  I phoned the local fish shop as they deliver ordered two large cod one cod row and large chips £11 delivered. It arrived 20 minutes later two nice cod plenty of chips and a cod row for Barney our dachshund realy good value and good eating When I was at my brothers in Suffolk we went to Dunwich beach fishing in the big free car park that is right on the beach there is a large fish and chip shop that has seatting inside and out my brother told me that it had a reputation for realy good fish and chips and that coach loads of people turned up during the day for lunch. Three of us were fishing but my brother clive did not fancy lunch so he stayed with the gear and myself and Paul went to have lunch my brother sat outside and I went in and ordered a large cod and chips and a large plaice and chips for my brother and two cokes £20-70 pence I thought this must be a bit near the mark and went and sat outside with my brother . It came out after about ten minutes and they were busy to say the portions were small would be understated I did not count the chips but there were maybe a dozen the fish was by no means large and it was not a thick fillet either and the cokes were not cold we ate our meal it was not what I am use to it was rubbish and not worth half of what they were charging we went back to the beach. When I got home at the end of the week I phoned up and asked to speak to the manager and told him who I was were I lived and that his fish and chips were rubbish compared with what I could get in london for half the money so if you should ever go to Dunwich give your eyes a treat before you order and do not get ripped off like I did there are a couple of good pubs in the village about a 1/4 mile from the beach

I would much prefer a good pub meal than anything from a chippy. And the pubs need the support of people going in as well. If we dont use the pubs then they shut, gone forever. But just goes to show, that not all places with a good reputation deserve that reputation.

It's been a long time since I've been there but I also remember it being expensive, maybe not as extreme as it is now but I also thought it didn't deserve the reputation it had.  My local chippy is much better.  it's typical for a seaside town that has plenty of visitors with not many options.   cheers

Coach loads of people at the place is no guarantee of quality. Far too many people are happy to accept inferior food and not complain about it. You can bet your bottom dollar that if the waiting staff ask how the food is, people will always say "very nice, thank you" when in reality, it's crap. Mind you, some people's standards are very low.

A place like the one you are talking about perceives that it has a captive market and that people want fish and chips at the seaside so they charge premium prices. Plaice can be expensive so that will have added something to the bill. Shame you didn't go in after eating your food and confront them face to face.

I've been lucky to have access to some very good chippies since I got into fish and chips. I never used to eat fish until I was almost 30. All those wasted years...

A large cod and chips costs me £4.70.

the picture you see is no portrait of me, it's surreal to be shown to someone i don't know

Bob is spot on about the complaining thing......not enough people complain about food ....but if I get anything to complain about....I ALWAYS do...

I have lost count of the number of times I have complained about ...price, quality, service etc etc...

I remember going into a Fish and Chip restaurant in Llangollen in Wales.....I could tell immediately that the chips had been reheated...they were very tough with a thick skin, a sure sign of being cooked twice......and the fish was grey as well, all in all a pretty crap dinner especially as it cost me about 17 quid.

...so I decided to complain....Maggie my wife was saying.......

"It's OK Ray.....it's not that bad"..

....but me being me......there was no way I was going to let that go so I went up to the counter and explained that when I go in to a restaurant of any kind....I expect freshly cooked food ...not warmed up leftovers.

The staff started babbling in Welsh....like they always seem to do when they don't want English people to know what they are saying....I interrupted their conversation and told them I wanted my money back....NOW!

They duly gave me my money back and we went in another restaurant further up the road and it was absolutely fantastic.......and it was cheaper.

I don't really mind how much I pay for a meal ( within reason of course )....so long as it is GOOD food and well cooked....not much to ask for really...is it?

I think people are mostly like that....if the food is good...people will return for more. Take sandwiches for example....I never notice what a sandwich costs me BUT I do notice how good or bad it is. There is a sandwich shop I know and they make the best sandwiches in the North of England I reckon.. ...but they are not cheap and the shop has extended it's premises two or three times now and is literally making a fortune and has done for the past 20 years or so.

Proof that the quality of the food overshadows the price...well, certainly in the case of sandwiches anyway....

I don't think I have ever complained in a chippy but I have in restaurants, more than once and ususally get offered things like the drinks bill free, or the deserts free or a repeat meal on another day for half price or something, best I've had is a 20 quid meal for a fiver, all this is still eating the meal I was originally served don't remember ever receiving anything that was too bad to eat.  It is worth complaining if there is genuine reason to.  cheers
