DACE

A few weeks ago we had a discussion on dace fishing,,,,i promised Benny i would explain to him and the forum the art of catching big bags of dace but it appears Benny has gone missing,,,,however the story maybe of interest to others on the forum,,,,,,so to continue,,,,some years ago in the local Birmingham angling press and i belive in the national angling papers there was banter about big bags of dace 100lbs was talked about some people said it could be done others where not so convinced,,,,all kinds of reasons were put forward why it wouldnt happen or why it would....this happened in and around the early seventies....if we can go back in time i remember the middle Severn and Avon in the fifties when it was easy to catch 20 or 30 lbs of these fish after all they were i my opinion a very prolific fish and could be found in numbers in most swims on my native rivers,,,,,but to catch 100lb of the blighters was a different kettle of fish,,,,however we thats me and a couple of friends decieded to give it a go,,,so where do you start,,,,which river,,,,what time of year and in what conditions ,word of mouth would play a big part and looking at match results from the various venues would also help,,,so this was our plan    more to follow

Re: DACE

our plan soon hit a snag contest results during the summer months were not good on either the Severn or the Avon and my two mates soon got fed up with wild goose chases so i was left to go it alone i had been a loner anyway since my dad had passed on,,,,i looked at the Trent around Newton Solney good match results where coming from that area,,,wednesday opens mainly some of the cofton hackett lads where cleaning up with mainly dace catches so i gave it a go but never managed more than 40lb of smallish fish and struggled to do that,,,,,i dont know about you but my preference when fishing a river was to fish left to right especially when fishing the stick float,,,,,so after a great deal of time and belive me wasted  outings,,,,i noticed the Wye was producing big match weights around Hay on Wye these were south Wales matches run by the Cardiff Nomads and the Glamorgan anglers i got myself a ticket or two just to try the water infact the first match i had a ticket for was called off because the river was out of sorts i went anyway and walked the bank looking for likely pegs,,,,these matches attracted top class match anglers from all over the U K,,,so they were a good yardstick for the potential of the water,,,and were held during the winter months when the fish were shoaling up so a good bag was on the cards,,,,,i found out the water was matches only and no day tickets,,,,but a bottle of scotch to the gillie was all it took to get permission to fish on weekdays whenever i wanted but i was to take no one else with me,,,,my first visit armed with a gallon of maggots produced just over 60lb of prime dace average around 3 to the pound,,,,,has anyone ever thought about the quanitiy of fish that you would need in a swim to catch 100lb at 2 or 3 to the pound?? belive me its mind boggling,,,however i had no intention of giving in and it was in the 80s that i reached my goal.....more to follow

Re: DACE

after covering the Wye from top to bottom looking for suitable pegs that sustained one of my favourite fish the Dace in big numbers along with my wife Ronnie we joined the Builth Wells angling club as coarse members as this was a known game fishery we had to obey strict rules regarding the trout and salmon...but this became the break through i had been looking for in my quest for 100lb of dace the area was alive with them big fish as well 2 to the lb jobs which meant i had to catch at least 200 fish a tall order and to catch that many meant there had to be between 500 and 600lb minimum in the shoal,,,,that was my thinking anyway and being winter daylight hours were short,,,,,i recieved a phone call from Mike Morgan the local bailiff telling me there was a massive shoal of fish just up from the town bridge which stretched bank to bank and around 20 yds deep,,,,the river was just running off after a spate and these fish would be hungry,,,,the locals didnt fish for coarse fish so the shoal wouldnt disperse overnight,,,,armed with 2 gallon of maggots a gallon each off we went covering the 70plus miles from Bewdley so we would be there at first light and yes the fish were still hovering just above the bridge  a perfect sight indeed for me anyway,,,Ronnie wasnt bothered as long as she caught some fish,,,,,so the stage was set 100lb or bust     more to follow,,,,my way of compiling a massive bag of dace

Re: DACE

I'm looking forward to this Aborra as 100lb of dace is massive, already I can see the amount of effort you put in even before getting your gear out.

I will have to look this up as I might not get much chance over the next couple of weeks or so to look in on the site,  the rest of this week going to be pretty busy and then next week i'm away off on the family holidays.  Hopefully I will get to have a look before I go on holiday  cheers

I live with FEAR everyday sometimes she lets me go fishin

Thanks for that Abborra I had a crap night and read it about 2am did not get a chance to comment as I had business over the lake this morning so I went over early about 4-30 a.m. then when I was finished over there about 12-30 pm had to go to the hospital to get my bloods done I had a phone call this morning on my mobil from the hospital to say the had a cancelation for this thursday so I took it. I thought to myself when you said about the dace a few weeks ago it has got to br the WYE in his neck of the woods

Re: DACE

we arrived on the river before first light the morning was still no wind no frost to freeze the rod rings and the water temp was really warm for the time of year,,,i had a quick cuppa made by Ronnie and started to sort out my gear i made up 3 x 13ft match rods all armed with close face reels( my favourite )method 2,5 main line 1,7 hooklenghts and three ultra stick floats around 7 no 4s broken down into no 6 and 8 shots fished shirt button style which i could always alter if necessary the floats all carried 1 rubber at the top and three down the stem incase of breakage the last rubber i always prefered to over hang the end of the float by up to half an inch this was to reduce the splash on the retrieve the only difference in the set ups were hooksize one size 18 1x 16 1 x 14 more about this later,,,,i knew the swim from previous sessions was a steady glide no crease and about 6 ft deep hence the fairly light floats,,,,,i never sit down when float fishing any moving river so it was bait apron on,,,,bait wise i had 4 pints of white and 4 pints of yellow magotts real good bait with a big food sack   a quick plumbing told me the river was slightly up but not enough to spoil my day so i hoped....the only trouble with the Wye in winter was the trout that would be shoaled up with the dace and perhaps a few grayling,,,hence the three rods no time to start pussy footing with trout and really no time for changing hooklenghts,,,,Ronnie would do that for me and i could just grab another rod,,,,when stick float fishing i always gave myself a point of retrieve so that when the fish started feeding the idea was to take fish from the head of the shoal and never if possible to try to drag fish from the tail end which could end the day before it had started one lost fish could spook the lot especially if the trout were about,,,,,the seceret of good float fishing is feed,,,,only in my case loose feed maggots half a dozen to start with every cast and slightly downstream of my position this would alter later.....i started on the 18 set up and single maggot,,,,three swims down i was into my first fish around 8oz good start and a good size i was catching at a great rate but noticed the fish were dropping back down the swim which meant i was loosing time and my catch rate and the first brownie had showed and shed the barbless hook..i got Ronnie to change the hooklenght for me while i grabbed another rod and doubled the bait 2 maggots on a 16,,,,i drew the fish back up the swim but altering the entrance of the loose feed,,,to just in front of me and the fish moved back up the swim,,,,to realise my ambition i new i had to catch between 200 and 300 fish a hard target with short daylight hours,,,Ronnie was trying to keep count of my catch just to see how i was going,,,,,the problem was people where coming onto the bank and standing half way down my swim( oh look he/s caught a fish and another) bloody idiots but the wife got them to move after telling them what i was doing,,,,,the brownies where by now having a go which i knew they would 4 or 5 on the trot one around 4lb which really spoilt the swim i was afraid they had killed the swim but no the dace came back better than ever i altered my feeding pattern i fed upstream of me switched onto a 14 hook with three maggots and got the fish under the rodtip i finished up catching 4 or 5 fish without changing the bait they were taking the skins and did so untill i completed my day the fish where weighed by my friend Mike and Ronnie 104 LB and a few ounces i had done it  its a strange world is angling what pleases one doesn/t please another i got a bee in my bonnet i managed it another 4 times during the 80s now i dont even own a keepnet ,,,,some people will ask did you use a landing net yes but i lifted most of the fish to hand
