the Hampshire Avon

GREG i thought i would keep you waiting for the dace,,,i think you might find this more to your liking,,,,i was working at the BSA Motor Cycles in 1969 and one night reading the angling times i noticed a full page spread on IBSLEY the Earl of Normantons water 6 miles of water above and below IBSLEY bridge day permits 6 shillings a day only 6 anglers allowed each day,,,,i belive the story was written by Tom Williams a river keeper you might know him i dont know he used to write every week in the paper,,,,talking about my river,,,,,and the different seasons during the year,,,,,anyway this spread got me going and i had to go and fish it so we got three tickets off the bailiff LT COL CROWE and what a man he was,,,i dont know if you ever met him,,,,,we had to collect our permits at 9am from his house just by the river and pay of course,,,we arrived in plenty of time infact we had breakfast on the river bridge,,,,at around 8 55am i made the fatal mistake of knocking his door what a rollocking i got from the man,,,,9 am is the time said he not 8 55am and shut the bloody door in my face,,,,we had a laugh about it after and became friendly with the old man,,,,,because we made a few visits.....the fishing was fantastic big roach massive perch chub and barbel,,,,the only trouble was if they had been weed cutting upstream you could only fish the backwaters but never the less a fantastic venue did you ever fish it?????

Re: the Hampshire Avon

I had a Christchurch ticket and a Wimborne and district  and  L.A.A. for the waters on the hampshire avon and the stour and I know of the stretch from Richard Walkers writings on that particular water but I am not sure if Iever fished it so much good water in that area your spoilt for choice but non of it is easy unless you know how to fish it and that is early and late . Between 9 am and 5pm your better of having a leisurely breakfast a kip then a nice lunch in the pub a visit to the tackle shop to get some more bait another kip and then back on the riverin the summer that is .I remember that Tom Williams and his writings in the A.T. he was involved in some of the early vidios and angling films big man not a lot of hair Iseem to remember.

Hi Abborra, I fished the avon quite a bit back in the 80s-90s. Cannot remember fishing the Ibsley bit but, I vaguely think I did. Below that around Ringwood I did and below that all the way down to Christchurch. The Bisterne stretch was good when you could get on it when the Salmon season ended. Greg is right about the early morning or late fishing. Used to fish it all day and only in the evening the fish used to come on. Then you had to be off the water by 7pm if I remember rightly; very frustrating. I used to fish against the trend ie, gallons of maggot and hemp and just used to freeline cheese between the weed. caught a fair few chub and barble that way. Stayed in Fordingbridge as a kid with dad back in the 60s and had a good bag of grayling in the free park stretch opposite the hotel one morning. The rest of the weekend caught nothing much to my dads disgust as he spent a fortune on hotel and day tickets and he missed that early morning session. Been in the bar all night and couldnt get up in the morning. Served him right... Must get back down there sometime.

I remember when they banned maggot on the royalty the place was empty within a monththat was in the early seventies some anglers would have two gallon of maggot a gallon was about the norm for a day and it was like southend pier with a rod every ten feet somedays everyone on the feeder not a nice place to be.

If I could only fish one fishery for the rest of my life it would be Britford. It as everything a river fisherman could want. Spent many happy days just standing in that river a trotting a float for what ever comes along, my idea of heaven.

Like abbora I have fished the Blandford stretch and very nice it was too. I fished the Royalty a few times but, only the bit up river. You cannot get on the famous swims unless you run fast first thing in the morning to get them apparently. Never was good at running. However, the stations above the royalty were always better for me and my brother some years ago. Winkton, Bisterne, Severals, Ringwood etc. and half the price!!

Fished the Bat and Ball stretch once, lovely piece of water but, very poor fishing as I undersatand it now. In its hey day was very good so I hear but, still a lovely stretch and the old pub full of history.

Fished the Bat and Ball in the late 60's early 70's many 2lb roach came from here. Was in the area a few years ago and gave it a fish. Had some nice chub and dace but the river had changed and the roach were gone.
