How quick do fish grow? I know different species grow at various speeds, the reason I ask this, I was Fishing a Little pond on Sunday and caught about a dozen small tench varying from about 3" to 5" the smallest Tench I've ever caught, I know in the first year they grow quite quickly but don't the age of these fish anyone got any Idea.

Re: How quick do fish grow?

Very little has been written about the early days of the tench it is very true that not many small tench get caught .I know of a few waters that have large heads of little tench up to six inches but very few get caught on rod and line yet in the traps put in for crays you can have as many as fifty in a trap and what little beuties they are . Tench are one of the slowest growing of all the ciprinids and on average take ten years to reach 4 pound females grow quicker than males as a rule.

A lot depends on the feed they eat, like all animals they will grow more healthy if they have the right feed to feed on,this will help in the growth rate but like Greg says they can take a long time to reach there full size,Tench have a life span of around 20 years and half of that is growing time, males grow to around 7/8lb wile females grow into double figours so you see like Greg says the females are the big ones.

A lot depends on what you mean by size,is it weight or length, weight is all down to feeding but length is down to age.

I make mistakes i am only human well half the time.

I would imagine a tench of about 3 inches long to be 2 or 3 years old

Re: How quick do fish grow?

I read that Tench are getting bigger due to warmer climate. Their feeding season is longer and coupled with the use of boilies they are getting bigger. I read somewhere that Tench are the most likely species to get the record for. I dont know the record or when it was last broken but, I can believe this to be true. I have noticed Tench being more active in April than years ago although I still find May and June the best months but, April is catching up. After May and June I find that catches are still spasmodic. So, if you fancy getting into the records books Tench may be the best fish to try and do it with.

By coincidence I was reading Izaak walton on tench last week and he writes a lot about Tench being the doctor fish. I think he said they were used by human doctors as well in that time.

I lived in france for a while and saw many coarse fish in the fishmongers, bream and roach etc. cannot remember seeing tench but, I guess they have a different pallet to ours. That will be the next EU ruling, our palletes will have to be brought into aline with thiers. And so it should be !!!

The last record weight that I have is 14 pound 3 oz by P.Gooriah from Wraysbury no1 1987. The only thing is with catching early tench is that they can be loaded with spawn and milt not a pretty sight in my book.

Re: How quick do fish grow?

when i was fortunate to aquire some water on the river Monnow in the early 70s part of my 5 year lease stated i had to stock the river with brown trout which were put in as yearlings around 4 inches long within 2 years they were at a takable size of 8 inches.....how do i know this the fish were marked with a blue dye on one of the finns but of course it all depends on the food content of the water

Food availability is the reason most acid based river produce sea trout and not many stay at home brown trout very low natural food tables unlike the chalk streams that are abundant with natural food and produce more stay at home browns.

Re: How quick do fish grow?

Eels males that is work on a seven to nine year cycle and 10 to twelve years for females before they change to silver eels for the trip back across the atlantic to the sargasso The males reach a size of 40cm and weigh only 4oz whilst the females were 60cm and weigh 1pound 4oz. The size difference between males and females is so consistant that any silver longer than 45cm is almost certain to be a female. River Bann silver eel sizes are very simalar to those found in Windermere catchment area where the largest female caught was 4pound 8oz and the average is 1pound 3oz for female sivers and 4oz for males. Windermere fish aged from otoliths ranged from 9 to 19 years.

Re: How quick do fish grow?

14lb 15lb tench are just awesome. My largest is about 6lb and I am trying to imagine a cod I caught of 15lb being a tench and it just blows me away. I think if ever I saw something like that come out of the water, I would pass out.

I wonder if there is a limit that a species can reach. Some sort of gene they carry that will limit their size. I am thinking along the lines of taking a roach and giving it as much water as it wants and as much food as it wants, clean water and no deseases or predators... What is stopping it getting to 15lb in weight.  There must be a maximum weight per species that it is impossible to go over?
