Re: HOLIDAYS AND TRAVEL COSTS

Hi Greg,  I would say cost wise that's comparable to travelling by car, for me I would say I could do Devon and back from where I live on 130 quids worth of fuel.  Time wise South Devon is around 7 or 8 hours if I remember from the last time I did it so from London could probably do it in around 5 hours.  Admittedly if you want to have a leg stretch you have to stop.  I don't always think travelling by train is that cheap, sometimes it is, for example quite some time ago I went to London for a Job interview and bought a ticket in advance and got return including tube ticket for 25 quid but the next time I went a couple of weeks later I didn't get the chance to buy in advance so was asked for 70 quid for the same journey.  I travel from time to time with my job so have flown in and out of Heathrow quite a few times and the cheapest and quickest way for me to get to Heathrow and back is to rent a car.  In saying that you can't grumble at 130 quid for first class rail travel to Devon plus whatever your cab fares are to Paddington and at the other end.

If you book in advance it is possible to get a flight to Spain for 50 quid.  Personally for travelling around the UK I would rather go in my car, it is not that often I holiday in the UK though unless it is a second holiday, my main holiday is always elsewhere but then again it costs me a fortune as I don't normally do the so called cheap ones to Spain etc. which I don't think are that cheap when you add it all up. I tend to put a bit aside every month to have a holiday to remember.  I guess I'm lucky I can do that.   cheers

Re: HOLIDAYS AND TRAVEL COSTS

If you can book eon's in advance and are traveling alone then the train can be cheaper than the car. If you have three or four in the car OR can't book in advance, the car is much cheaper. Not only that but managing your luggage on a train, or worse still your fishing tackle, is an absolute pig.

As a mass transport system the train is a farce. For years now the tree hugging brigade have talked about reducing road traffic by using trains, our trains can't cope with the numbers using them now, despite the high fares. They won't become a cheap mass transport system in my life, that is for sure.

Rant over :)

HOLIDAY AND TRAVEL

The freedom pass covers me 24 - 7 on all buses and tubes within the M25 most local bus services nationally and national rail within the M25 weekdays after 9-30 am and all times week -ends mine is valid till 2014 Saves me a small fortune myself and Sue could have traveled right across london to Hampton Court on bus tube and overground for free to watch the cycling time trials when I am fit I use it to fish the Thames up to hampton that is the westerly limit.

Have you never used the luggage service and guards van also you are not allowed to carry anything longer than a metre other than in the guards van and if you have a family rail card cost £26 a year you get a third reduction on two adults and up to four chidren travel for a £1 each this is every day. A senior citizens card gives you an even better deal .

But what  HOLIDAY and an adventure my grandparents had a caravan at jaywick from before the war the whole family used it as one lot packed up another turned up it was great . My nan had her eye on a bungerlow there before the war and wanted to buy it but my grandad said theres a war coming Liz it will get blown up or something. The area was resticted during the war and indeed my Nan and Grandad were bombed out of their house in hackney in the blitz anyway after the war they went back to the van in jaywick and the bungerlow was still there but it had been sold. Every time they went to the van and they had the plot right up to the seventies when one of my uncles bought it off my Nan. She would give his ears a bashing as they went past it to the van I could have bought that Art we could have had that bungerlow I had some great holidays at Jaywick we would travel like you by steam train from Liverpool street to clacton coming home when I was little and it was always of a night after the pubs shut I think my grandad would but me up in the net luggage rack  I would sleep all the way back to london as I got bigger I can remember sitting on a suitcase in the corridoor happy days we were lucky to be with the right people
