England international Mike Patten put the new TDZU 410 uptider from Daiwa through its paces by fishing it alongside a TDX model.
“Though the new Z version is lighter to handle than the TDX, I could not find any significant changes,” said Mike. “Being lighter gave the TDZU slightly more sensitivity and I could easily have held the rod all day.
“The downside of the lighter action showed when casting. The rod coped well with weights up to 6oz but struggled with 8oz. I can’t see this rod being comfortable chucking out 10oz, especially when you have to add a further couple of ounces for bait.
“As is usual with Daiwa, the finish was second to none. My final verdict, though, is of slight disappointment. I was hoping to see a great improvement over the old model.”
Fellow England man Ian McLean said: “I agree with Mike’s comments. Although the new rod is perfectly finished, I would like to see a manufacturer change the design of the uptider altogether, making the butt section shorter, the tip longer, and give us the option for the rod to be ringed for fixed-spool use.”
