The Quesnard or Mannez Lighthouse and the nearby bays, such as Popeye, are among the most popular marks on the island for spinning, float fishing and plugging enthusiasts.
The 109 feet (32 metres) high lighthouse, built in 1912, is situated between Fort Les Homeaux Florains and Fort Quesnard. The famous landmark with its distinctive black and white bands is unmanned and operated by Trinity House at Harwich.
There are conducted tours of the lighthouse in summer on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
SPECIES
Dense shoals of sandeels inhabit these sandy bays and attract various predators, such as bass, pollack, garfish, mackerel and ballan wrasse.
BEST BAITS
The best float-fishing bait is a frozen sandeel, which can be obtained from the local tackle shop.
A substitute is a slender strip cut from the belly of a freshly-caught mackerel. Most of the bass succumb to diving plugs or surface poppers.
TACKLE
The optimum outfit is an 11-foot spinning rod or carp rod combined with a small fixed-spool reel loaded with either clear monofilament line or braid.
This equipment is used for spinning, float fishing and plugging.
GETTING THERE
Drive down Braye Hill until you reach the crossroads at the bottom of the road. Turn right and then follow the same road until you reach the imposing structure of Quesnard Lighthouse, at the extreme eastern end of the island.
